What is a stairlift?
A stairlift is a chair that travels along a rail close to either side of the stairs at your home. The rail is attached directly to the stair treads, not the wall and installation takes only a few hours. Stannah stairlift designs can accommodate any type of staircase, including wood, metal, stone or concrete. Carpet and doors at the bottom of the staircase are also no problem. Handrails may need to be relocated for installation of your stairlift. A power socket is required within 1 metre of the top or the bottom of the stairs, preferably on the same side as the stairs. Step 1 - Assessment
On your initial enquiry we will ask you a few questions about your staircase and yourself to help us understand what your needs are and how we can help you. We then make an appointment to visit and measure your staircase to assess what sort of rail system you will require. Our consultant will also chat with you regarding your needs. Every staircase is different and everyone's needs vary so it is important we work through all the options available to ensure the best and safest solution is offered. Step 2 - Quote
We issue a quote for a stairlift. Our consultants are happy to work through all aspects of the quote with you so you understand all the options available. When the quote is accepted by the client we will ask you for a deposit to confirm your acceptance and this will enable us to confirm the unit to production. Stannah stairlifts and rails are customised to order and made to the highest quality standards. Throughout the manufacturing process we will update you of progress and advise of the proposed delivery and installation details.
Step 3 - Delivery and Installation
Straight units are usually installed within a week of the order.
Curved units, are custom made to your stairwell and therefore usually installed within 4-6 weeks of the order.
Installing a stairlift will normally take a couple of hours and because Stannah Stairlifts are fixed to the steps and not the wall, there is very little mess. We require a standard household power outlet within a meter of either the upper or lower landing. As part of the installation you will be show how to use all the features of your stairlift. Most importantly we will stay until your 100% confident in using your stairlift.

How much does a stairlift cost?

How long does it take to install and how disruptive is it?
It only takes a few hours to install your custom-made stairlft. And because our stairlifts are fitted to the stair treads, not the wall, the process is quick, clean and simple. Before our installers leave they will tidy up, test the stairlift thoroughly and show you exactly how to operate it.
What happens if I no longer need my stairlift?
The stairlift unit can be easily removed by one of our trained technicians. In the event that it is no longer required in the property Independence 2011 may offer to buy back the stairlift however the unit, must be less than 5 years old, must have been serviced annually and the offer will be subject to other terms and conditions.
Can I buy a reconditioned stairlift?
Yes. From time to time we have available reconditioned stairlifts for both straight and curved stairs. For curved stairs you will need an additional custom-made rail. Please contact us for more details.
Is funding assistance available?
Funding assistance towards the purchase and installation of a stairlift to assist you with access throughout your home may be available. The Ministry of Health or Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) might be able to fund this modification. Independence 2011 are proud to be recognised as approved funding suppliers for the Ministry of Health. To enquire further and discuss your eligibility for assistance from the Ministry of Health Equipment and Modification Services (EMS) contact your occupational therapist or a general practioner. Do you have a stairlift to suit any stairway?
Yes. We have a range of stairlift models to suit virtually any stairway. The stairways can be installed indoors or outdoors, either straight, with an intermediate landing, or with bends or curves.
Will the stairlift take up much room on my staircase?
No. Each stairlift model is designed to fold away neatly leaving as much space as possible for others to use the stairs.
Where does the stairlift rail mount?
With all our stairlift models the rail mounts directly to the stair treads and not to the walls. This means that there is absolute minimal damage done to the home.
Are there chairlift colour options to suit my decor?
Yes. There are a range of colour options for the seat upholstery, and on some models there are also rail colour options.
Can a stairlift go around corners and double bends?
Yes. We have models to suit virtually any stairway with bends or curves, both indoors and outdoors.
I have long narrow stairs, will your stairlifts fit?
Yes. Stannah Stairlifts offer a slim line straight rail system with a compact carriage, along with folding arms, seat and footrest our stairlfit range are especially suitable for narrow staircases. How long does the battery in a stairlift last?

How much will my stairlift cost to run?
On average usage, the running cost will make very little difference to a household bill. With average usage of 1 1/2 hrs per day, the cost is less than on third of the cost of boiling a Kettle!
Can it be moved when you are not seated on it?
Yes, there are remote controls conveniently positioned at the top and bottom of the stairs to enable the stairlift seat to be moved independently up or down the stairs.
Can the stairlift be used to carry goods?
Yes. The weight capacity of the stairlift will normally enable you to carry goods on your lap when you are using the stairlift. There is also a plastic coated wire basket available to suit some stairlift models which can be used to carry your groceries, laundry, fire wood, books etc. up or down the stairs using the remote controls. Are the stairlifts easy to operate?
Yes. Every stairlift is designed with controls which are simple and easy to use and there are optional chair arm controls to suit the users needs. At the completion of the installation of the stairlift our technicians will show you how to use and care for your stairlift and provide you with a 'Users Handbook' for your future reference.
Can you take a walking frame, or wheelchair, on it?
No. The stairlift is not designed to carry a walking frame, or wheelchair. We recommend that another walking frame, or wheelchair, is kept for you to use at the top of the stairs.
Are stairlifts noisy?
No. Our stairlifts are not noisy at all. The stairlifts have electric battery powered motors which ensure a quiet, smooth ride.
What happens if there is a power cut?
Our stairlifts are battery powered and will continue to work even in a power cut. In this case, a fully charged battery will complete approximately ten journeys on an average staircase, before power is restored.

Independence 2011 technicians are available Monday to Friday, business hours, for support and breakdown services. We offer a 2 year comprehensive warranty for all new installations that covers the stairlift for callouts due to product failure, when installed by an Independence 2011 technician. Please note callouts due to misuse, accidental damage or other circumstances beyond our control will be charged – see T and Cs for more information. In order to keep your stairlift working well, we recommend the servicing of your stairlift annually. Services are in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Stannah Stairlifts recommends your indoor stairlift should be serviced once a year by a trained and approved Independence 2011 technician. It is common practice for us to remind you of the annual yearly servicing as it falls due and such services will incur a fee.
